FARMERS SHOULD NOT BE ASKED TO PAY INCME TAX: AJIT

KRISHI EXPO 2000 OPENS

The Union Agriculture Minister, Shri Ajit Singh today reiterated that farmers should not be asked to pay Income Tax. He said that since there is ceiling on agricultural land holding and since 80% of these holdings in the country are below 5 acres, it is not practicable to tax farmers. Stating that though the country has made progress in agriculture, the condition of the farmer is worsening he suggested that legislative measures would be required to protect farmers in the country. Shri Ajit Singh was addressing a group of farmers, who have come from all over the country, after inaugurating the Krishi Expo 2000, here.

He told the farmers that they have to live with the provisions of WTO and they should benefit from it by increasing efficiency and productivity. He asked them to apply new technologies for better production.

The weeklong exposition showcases developments in the field of agriculture, different agri- products, equipment etc. The theme of the exposition is "Women in Agriculture". During the exposition, seminars and farmers sangoshti will be regularly held.
