CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR JANUARY, 2002; BASE 1984-85=100

    The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of January, 2002 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for January 2002 is 393, which is 1 point less than the index for the month of December, 2001. At the major group level, the index for January, 2002 has not shown any significant decrease when compared to the index for December,, 2001. The largest decrease at the major group level has been reported in the case of "Food, Beverages & Tobacco" which has decreased by 1.53%; however the index for "Housing" group has increased by 3.40%. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has decreased by 14.32% followed by "Sugar, Honey etc". and "Condiments & Spices" which decreased by 1.64% and 1.42% respectively. With the corresponding All India index for January, 2001 being 376, the index for the month of January, 2002 has shown a rise of 4.5 percent over a year.

    The average index for the period April 2001 to January, 2002 works out to 390, which is higher by 5.4% over the average index of 370 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for January, 2002; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for January, 2002 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for January, 2001 are given below:-

    Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for January, 2002 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely January, 2001. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 3.2 to 8.9 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Meerut and the least increase in the case of Srinagar. The increases has less than 0 for 1 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 4 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 19 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 21 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 10 centres and 8.1 to 10.0 percent for 4 centres. As many as 28 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 4.5 percent and 28 centres have higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India figure whereas 3 centres have the same percentage increased as that the All-India figure.
