BSP POISED TO MEET 6.5 LAKH TONNES PRIME RAIL DEMAND IN NEXT FISCAL

Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has despatched 54,000 tonnes of prime rails to the Indian Railways in December, 2001. The December production and despatch of these rails are records in its four decade history of rail making and represents a jump of over 14,000 tonnes per month.

Indian Railways had placed orders for supply of 4.13 lakh tonnes of trains in 2000-01. Being convinced by BSP’s successful delivery, it has placed orders for 4.88 lakh tonnes of prime rails during the current fiscal. BSP has demonstrated that it could comfortably meet the 6.5 lakh tonnes prime rails demand of the Railways during 2002-03.

BSP’s profitability largely hinges on fulfilling the requirement of rails to its key customer, the Indian Railways. Its capability to fulfil any higher volume requirement of prime rails has ensured its fiscal health in the following years.
