QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION ANDUSE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94 = 100) FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 2001.

    The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of December, 2001 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 174.8 which is higher by 1.6% as compared to the month of December, 2000.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of December, 2001 stand at 140.9, 180.5, and 165.0 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 0.5%, 1.4% and 3.8% as compared to December, 2000. The cumulative growths during April-December, 2001-02 over the corresponding period of 2000-01 in the three sectors have been 1.1%, 2.4% and 2.7% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 2.3%.

3.    Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for December, 2001, the indices for November, 2001 have undergone the first revision and those for September, 2001 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions in the sectoral/general indices for September, 2001, the manufacturing sector's index for November, 2001 has undergone upward revision of 1.1% on account of upward revision in the production data reported by Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats. It has resulted in upward revision of general IIP for November, 2001 by 0.9%.

4. Ten out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of December, 2001 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 19.2% followed by 15.2% in Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and Coal Products and 10.8% in Other Manufacturing Industries. On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a growth of –11.2% followed by a growth of –8.1% in Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment and –5.0% in Food Products.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in December, 2001 as compared to December, 2000 is 2.0% in Basic goods, -4.1% in Capital goods and 1.1% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 8.5% and 1.5% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 3.2%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of December, 2001 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year including the cumulative indices and growth rates are enclosed.
