The Employees Provident
Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recovered Rs.265.23 crore out of
the outstanding arrear demand Rs.648.43 crore in the exempted
sector during 2001-2002. Major portion of arrears of exempted
establishments amounting to Rs.225.97 crore is in West Bengal.
It constitutes 58.92 per cent of the total arrears. Of the 258
defaulting establishments, 131 establishments belong to the private
sector accounting for Rs.150.65 crore while 127 such establishments
are in the public sector and account for Rs.232.55 crore arrears.
Out of the total
arrears in default of Rs.383.20 crore, an amount of Rs. 354.40
crore falls under unrealisable category as the same could not
be recovered over the years due to stay by courts, factories/establishments
having gone into liquiditation, factories declared sick by the
BIFR, etc. The balance of Rs.28.80 crore is realisable through
departmental action for which steps have been taken.
