The growth rate registered
during first quarter of the current financial year in Small Scale
Industries (SSI) sector has been estimated at 7.13 per cent. This
growth rate has been 1.18 per cent more as compared to the same
quarter of the previous year. As a result of various ongoing schemes
and programmes, the number of SSI units including tiny unit, has
increased from 29.44 lakh (registered and unregistered) in 1997-98
to 34.64 lakh in 2002-02. The total number of Small Scale units,
both in registered and unregistered, in the country at the end
of March, 2002 is estimated at 34.42 lakhs with fixed investment
of Rs. 84329 crore. The Central Government has been implementing
various schemes for the benefit of the small and tiny sector in
the country covering areas of credit, infrastructure, technology,
marketing, entrepreneurship development etc.
