INCREASED OFFTAKE OF FOODGRAINS DURING APRIL--OCTOBER 2002


Offtake of foodgrains from the central pool under PDS during April to October 2002 was ten million tonnes. The total offtake of foodgrains under PDS during the last one year, April to March 2001-02 was 13.83 million tonnes and 12.04 million tonnes during 2000-2001 (revised).

The offtake under other welfare schemes during April-October, 2002 was 54.8 lakh tonnes campared to the total offtake of 71.9 lakh tonnes under these scheme during April to March 2001-02, and 31.9 lakh tonnes during April to March 2000-01 (revised).

About 32.9 lakh tonnes of foodgrains comprising 2.8 lakh tonnes of rice and 30.1 lakh tonnes of wheat were sold under FCI’s open sale scheme during April-October 2002. The foodgrains sold under this scheme during April to March 2001-02 was 56 lakh tonnes compared to 14.9 lakh tonnes during April to March 2000-01 (revised).

Export of wheat and rice during April to October this year was 79.2 lakh tonnes comprising 28.6 lakh tonnes of wheat and 50.7 lakh tonnes of rice. Export of foodgrains during April-March 2001-02 and 2000-01 (revised) stood at 46.8 lakh tonnes and 14.9 lakh tonnes respectively.

The offtake under all schemes including PDS, welfare schemes, open sales and export stands at 267 lakh tonnes during the first seven months of the current financial year. The offtake under all these schemes were 313 lakh tonnes and 182.1 lakh tonnes during April to March 2001-2002 and 2000-01 (revised) respectively.
