INFLATION RATE FALLS BUT CONSUMER
PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS RISES
The
rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial
Workers continued to witness a downward trend with a marginal
fall of 0.27 percentage point during July, 2002. It went down
from 4.16% in June, 2002 to 3.89 per cent in July 2002. In July,
2001 the inflation rate was 4.04%.
The All India
Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for
July, 2002 (base 1982-100) went up by 5 points to stand at 481
(four hundred & eighty one) points. The CPI-IW during the
corresponding period last year had increased by six points.
The
Fall/Rise in index varied from centre to centre. In 64 centres,
the index increased between 1 to 14 points and in 2 centres it
remained constant whereas in another 4 centres it recorded a decrease
of 1 to 6 points when compared to the previous month.
During
the month Jamshedpur centre experienced the maximum increase of
14 points. The increase is mainly due to rise in House Rent as
well as in the prices of Vegetables & Fruits, Onions, Bus
Fare etc. On the other hand Nagpur centre experienced the maximum
decrease of 6 points mainly due to decline in House Rent reported
during the 39th round. The index remained stationery
in 2 centres viz. Salem and Bhopal.

of six main centres for July, 2002 stood at the following level:
