PRESIDENT TO GIVE AWAY
COMPUTER LITERACY EXCELLNCE AWARDS TOMORROW
The President Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will give
away the "1st Computer Literacy Excellence Awards for
Schools 2002" at a function here tomorrow. The function has been
organised by the Department of Information Technology. The Union
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Communications and IT, Shri
Pramod Mahajan will preside over the function. The Minister of
State for Communications and IT, Dr. Sanjay Paswan will also be
present on the occasion.
Department of Information Technology under the
Ministry of Communications and IT has instituted an Annual Award
with the objective to encourage the schools in the country to
implement computer literacy and IT to the students and to strive
for excellence in the field. In order to realise the national
goal of making "India – Major player in IT", it is of paramount
importance to inculcate computer literacy in students at a very
young age with the aim to expose them and develop interest amongst
the young minds in line with the philosophy of ‘Catch them young’
concept and prepare them as quality IT professionals.
Under this scheme, each State and UT Governments
were requested to forward the name of one best school from their
respective State/UT for Award of Excellence at the State/UT level,
with a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh for each winner. Further, from
the list of winners sent to Department of IT, three best schools
for Excellence awards at national level were selected by a jury
consisting of members at the level of Secretary, Additional Secretary
and Commissioner from the Department of Information Technology,
Ministry of Human Resources Development, Kendriya Vidhyalaya Sanghathan
etc.
The awards consist of a cash prize as well as
shields for the schools selected. The cash prize for the top most
school is Rs.10 lakhs, followed by Rs.7.5 lakhs for first runner
up and Rs.5 lakhs for the second runner up. However, cash prize
of Rs. 1 lakh is to be given to all the schools selected. Cash
prizes shall be used for upgrading the IT infrastructure in schools.
The award is open to all recognised schools in
the country. The award evaluates the performance in imparting
computer literacy over the last three years, availability of IT
infrastructure, trained faculty and participation in IT related
events of District, State and National level.
