CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR JULY, 2002; BASE 1984-85=100


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of July, 2002 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for July 2002 is 406, which is 4 points more than the index for the month of June 2002. At the major group level, the index for "Housing" has increased by 2.53% in July 2002 over the last month. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has increased by 5.24% followed by "Fruits" the index of which has increased by 3.05%; however, the index for "Sugar, Honey etc" has decreased by 1.01%. With the corresponding All India index for July, 2001 being 391, the index for the month of July, 2002 has shown a rise of 3.8 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April, 2002 to July, 2002 works out to 401, which is higher by 4.2% over the average index of 385 for the corresponding period of the previous year.

Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for July, 2002; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for July, 2002 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for July, 2001 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for June, 2002 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely July, 2001. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 3.1.to 8.6 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Vijayawada and the decrease in the case of Srinagar. The increases are less than 0 for 1 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 6 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 30 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 15 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 5 centres and 8.1 to 10.0 percent for 2 centres. As many as 33centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 3.8 percent and 25 centres have higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India figure whereas 1 centre has the same percentage increased as that of All-India figure.
