INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY ADVANI REVIEWS THE SITUATION


The Deputy Prime Minister, Shri L.K. Advani reviewed the situation in the country at a meeting in New Delhi today. This was ascertained that the Independence Day celebrations in various parts of the country passed off peacefully.

He was briefed by senior officers that the celebrations passed off peacefully at different places including in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East region.

In Jammu and Kashmir, functions were held at District and Sub-Divisional Headquarters and there was large public gathering besides the plan and threat from Tanzeem to perpetuate violence on this occasion. At Srinagar, the Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah addressed the gathering after unfurling the national flag. In Poonch and Doda, 5,000 to 7000 people attended the function besides threat posed by terrorist groups. At Leh in Ladakh, the public gathering was quite impressive and the celebrations passed off peacefully. At Drass in Kargil sector the Pakistan army occupying higher places fired 4 to 5 shells to disrupt the celebrations but the occasion passed off peacefully.

The Independence Day celebrations in North East States were held without any incident reported from anywhere. Reports from other parts of the country also spoke of peaceful and joyous celebrations with traditional gaiety and national spirit. It came out in the briefing that it could be possible because of the high alertness of the paramilitary forces, State police and the army and also the constant review of the situation by Deputy Prime Minister himself.
