SECOND MEETING OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE OF THE FIRST AFRO-ASIAN GAMES


The Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Sushree Uma Bharti has emphasised the need to educate sportspersons on doping issue. Describing it as a serious threat Sushree Uma Bharti said it has to be jointly tackled by various National Sports Federations, Sports Authority of India and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Sushree Uma Bharti was addressing the Second Meeting of the Organising Committee of the First Afro-Asian Games in New Delhi today. She said there is a need for constant monitoring of players in this regard. She said that the doping test laboratory of Sports Authority of India with modern facilities will be ready by early next year. She asked National Federations to ensure that drug-free squad goes to Asian Games to be held from next month.

She informed the Members of the Organising Committee that the Government has agreed to hold First Afro-Asian from 24th October – 1st November, 2003 in New Delhi. The Games which were scheduled for November 2001 were postponed following terrorists attack in New York. The Organising Committee congratulated Indian players ofr their excellent performance in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.
