RSP COLLECTIVE MEET POWER CRISIS
The employees of Rourkela
Steel Plant (RSP) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL)
have set a new example in crisis management during the recent
power crisis that caused a threat to plant's production. The crisis
was severe at the end of July 2002. The situation was extremely
critical and slightest disruption in supply would have caused
untold damage to the health of equipment and machinery. At this
juncture, senior executive and non-executives of Captive Power
Plant-I and Power Distribution System were put on round the clock
emergency duty to monitor and supervise the operation of the units.
The employees
took an unprecedented decision of over drawing power from the
grid. They took up the challenge and through meticulous planning
and monitoring ensured that the power drawal was within the safe
loading limits of auto-transformers at the sub-station. As a result
hot strip mill could role almost uninterruptedly maintaining the
production tempo and continuity in the integrated process. RSP's
daily requirement of power is 165-170 mw and the power generation
from CPP-I was around 35 mw during the phase. The managing director
of RSP has exhorted the CPP-I employees to work towards increasing
the average generation from the current level of 35 mw to 45 mw.
