PRESIDENT TO VISIT GUJARAT : FIRST VISIT OUTSIDE DELHI AFTER ASSUMPTION OF THE HIGHEST OFFICE

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India is making his first visit outside Delhi after assumption of the highest office in the country by visiting the Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad for drawing inspiration from the Father of the Nation. Dr. Kalam has planned his visit before the Independence Day after becoming the President of India, since from his school days Gandhiji was his inspiration as a noble leader.

During his 24-hour visit to Ahmedabad and Bhuj starting in the afternoon of 12 August 2002, the President’s engagements will include an interaction with school children. The President will also use this opportunity to learn personally about the rehabilitation measures undertaken by the Government of Gujarat and Non-Governmental Organisations there in the wake of recent disturbances. He will have an occasion to meet intellectuals, political leaders, technologists, industrialists among others. He will visit the house of Late Prof. Vikram Sarabhai, his respected Guru and a great visionary.

The President will take this opportunity to visit Kutch to learn about the progress on earthquake related disaster relief work, as he had been closely associated with certain relief activities right since earthquake struck Bhuj and other places on 26 January 2001.
