PRESIDENT TO VISIT GUJARAT : FIRST VISIT OUTSIDE DELHI AFTER ASSUMPTION
OF THE HIGHEST OFFICE
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,
President of India is making his first visit outside Delhi after
assumption of the highest office in the country by visiting the
Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad for drawing inspiration from the
Father of the Nation. Dr. Kalam has planned his visit before the
Independence Day after becoming the President of India, since
from his school days Gandhiji was his inspiration as a noble leader.
During his 24-hour
visit to Ahmedabad and Bhuj starting in the afternoon of 12 August
2002, the President’s engagements will include an interaction
with school children. The President will also use this opportunity
to learn personally about the rehabilitation measures undertaken
by the Government of Gujarat and Non-Governmental Organisations
there in the wake of recent disturbances. He will have an occasion
to meet intellectuals, political leaders, technologists, industrialists
among others. He will visit the house of Late Prof. Vikram Sarabhai,
his respected Guru and a great visionary.
The President will
take this opportunity to visit Kutch to learn about the progress
on earthquake related disaster relief work, as he had been closely
associated with certain relief activities right since earthquake
struck Bhuj and other places on 26 January 2001.
