INCREASE IN JUDGE STRENGTH
A seven-member committee
comprising Registrar Generals of High Courts and Law Secretaries
of States and Union Territories has been constituted to examine
and recommend norm for creation and increasing of judge strength
in district and subordinate courts keeping in view the judgement
of the Supreme Court of March 21, 2002 in the case of All India
Judges Association and Others Vs. Union of India and Others, directing
the Centre, the States and the Union Territories to increase the
number of judges from the existing 10.5 judges per million population
in the country to 50 judges per million population over a period
of the next five years at the rate of 10 per cent of such increase.
Meanwhile,
the Centre has advised all State Governments to take necessary
action to increase the judge strength as per the direction of
the Supreme Court and inform the Central Government about the
steps taken in this regard.
