INFLATION RATE FALLS BUT CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS

The rate of inflation based upon
the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a marginal
fall of 0.02 percentage point during March, 2002. It went down
from 5.19 % in February 2002 to 5.17 % in March, 2002. In March,
2001 the inflation rate was 2.53 %. The All India Consumer Price
Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for March, 2002 (base
1982-100) went up by two points to stand at 468 (four hundred
& sixty eight) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period
last year had increased by two points. The Fall/Rise in index
varied from centre to centre. In 50 centres, the index increased
between 1 to 11 points and in 4 centres it remained constant whereas
in another 16 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 14 points
when compared to the previous month. During the month, Srinagar
centre experienced the maximum increase of 11 points. The increase
is mainly due to rise in prices of Wheat Atta, Meat, Onions, Vegetables
and Fruits. Guntur centre experienced the maximum decrease of
14 points mainly due to the fall in prices of Rice, Onions, vegetables
and fruits etc. The index remained stationery in 4 centres viz.
Ranchi-Hatia, Tiruchirapally, Bangalore and Mundakayam. The index
in respect of six main centres for February, 2002 stood at the
following level: -
