Since liberalization
of Automobile sector in July 1991, 17 foreign companies have been
granted approval by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)
for setting up manufacturing units for the production of Passenger
cars, Multi-Utility Vehicles and Commercial Vehicles.
Automobile Sector
employs 4.5 lakh people directly and more than one crore people
indirectly and has great potential for employment generation due
to its forward and backward linkages. Among forward linkages,
the key generator of employment are Oil Industry, distribution
and after-sales service network as also the after sales supply
of spares and replacement by the auto component industry. As for
backward linkages, Auto Industry is also the largest consumer
of raw material like steel, aluminum, zinc alloys, rubber and
plastics resulting in employment generation in these sectors.
This information was
given in the Lok Sabha today by Dr. Vallabhbhai Kathiria, Minister
of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in a written
reply to a question by Shri Aditya Nath Yogi.
