WORK ON RAIL-CUM-ROAD BRIDGE OVER BRAHMAPUTRA AT DIBRUGARH TO COMMENCE ON SUNDAY

PM TO BE THE CHIEF GUEST

The Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee will inaugurate on Sunday (April 21, 02) the commencement of the construction of rail-cum-road bridge at Bogibheel near Dibrugarh over river Brahmaputra in Assam. The Minister of Railways, Shri Nitish Kumar and a number of other dignitaries including the Governor and Chief Minister of Assam will be present on the occasion.

This 4.3 kilometre long bridge is one of the most ambitious and challenging projects undertaken by Railways so far in cooperation with Ministry of Surface Transport. It will have 46 kms of rail links and 29 kms of road approaches and will cost about Rs.1762 crore. Likely to be completed in about 7-8 years, the bridge will establish a direct link between the upper and lower Assam in this eastern most area of the state and between lower Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It will reduce the distance between Dibrugarh and Rangiya by 192 km and between Tinsukia and Rangiya by 96 km, affecting considerable savings in terms of journey time and fuel costs.
