NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP IN INDIA

    There is enough scope for the corporate sector to fund schemes relating to protection of environment and control of pollution. It is a social responsibility requiring immediate attention said today, Shri Aurn Jaitley, Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, inaugurating the two-day National Workshop on Promoting Corporate Citizenship in India. He said that only 11 per cent of the private sector companies are conscious of discharging their obligations. The public sector, he said, has been sincerely meeting its obligations to the society. Off late private sector has shown some positive achievements in the field of education and are running some quality educational institutions. They have also entered into the health sector. There is more scope of sponsoring libraries and musiums, he said.

    Shri Jaitley stressed on their active participation in the relief measures at the time of natural calamities. He said that funding the poltiical system in a Parliamentary democracy is also taken up by the private sector. He hoped that this process will be gradually legitimized.

    The United Nations Volunteers and New Academy of Business, UK, are jointly implementing an action research project on current trends in business-community relations and corporate citizenship in seven developing countries, of which India is one. The host institution for the project is TERI (Tata Energy Research Institute), New Delhi. This National Workshop is being organized as a part of the initiatives under the action research project, with thematic focus on Promoting Corporate Citizenship in India: Challenges and Opportunities.
