BOKARO STEEL PLANT REGISTERS GROWTH

Bokaro Steel Plant (BRL) has registered growth in various areas of its working during the financial year 2001-02. Despite sluggish steel market worldwide, it could achieve growth in its HR products by regulating production as per market demand. Effort on resources optimization, cost reduction through improvements and innovations, development of new varieties of steel and improvement in work culture and discipline have borne fruits.

The thrust on optimum use of resources during the financial year has given encouraging results. Production of HR plate/ sheet during the year has registered 14 per cent growth compared to last year. Significant improvement was also achieved in GP/GC, extra hard pitch, toluene, LS Naptha and SB oil. Production from continuous casting, HDGL, granulated slag, power generation, sulphuric acid and anthracene oil registered all time record production.

In spite of adverse market conditions despatch of HR coil, GP/GC, granulated slag and anthracene oil was an yearly record. A growth of 8 per cent was achieved in export compared to last fiscal. HR plate and HR sheet despatch registered improvement by 11 per cent and 36 per cent respectively. Special attention was given for despatch of high valued special steel which has been 20 per cent of the total saleable steel despatches. There has been an overall growth in saleable steel despatches to home sales in excess of 10 per cent compared to previous year.

Other areas which got priority during the year were innovations for improvement and use of idle assets. Innovative steps like use of pitch creosote mixture in power plants' boiler, 2T Bloom production in steel melting shop, pup coil processing line in cold rolling mill, in house manufacture of SMS-1 converter bricks along with many reclamation projects have resulted into quantum gains.
