SETTING UP FAMILY COURTS IN 2002-2003

The Government has planned to set up 34 new Family Courts all over the country during the current financial year 2002-2003 on a cost- sharing basis with the States.

At present, there are 85 Family Courts set up under the Family Courts Act, 1985, all over the country. A total of 1,12,797 cases are pending in all the 85 courts as on date.

The Central Government has been persuading the State Governments and Union Territories periodically to establish more and more Family Courts to resolve the family disputes. The Committee has also recommended appointment of more and more women judges for Family Courts for making such courts more efficacious and conciliatory.
