First Lady Lt Gen of Indian Army
Lt Gen (Mrs) Punita Arora of the Army’s Medical Corps is to take over as Commandant, Armed Forces Medical Collage, Pune on 01 Sep 2004. She is to be the first lady Lieutenant General of the Indian Army.

Lt Gen Punita Arora is a graduate from Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune and has received more than 15 medals and awards during her MBBS Course. She joined Army Medical Corps in 1968. She did her Post-graduation in Gynae and Obst from AFMC and was again awarded Gold Medal for standing first in Pune University. In her 36 years of service, she has worked as Gynaecologist at various prestigious Armed Forces Hospitals like Prof & Head AFMC and Army Hospital (R & R).

She was awarded Sena Medal by President of India for establishing Gynae Endoscopy and Oncology facilities in Armed Forces Hospitals. Her determined effort helped in putting up the facilities of Assisted Reproductive Technology at AFMC and Army Hospital (R & R) which has come as boon to large number of infertile couples of Armed Forces. She has been a member of 8th Five Year Plan on Safe Motherhood and Polio Eradication Programme.

Her services and hard work was not only appreciated as Clinician but also as an administrator. The efficient and prompt treatment to the victims of Kalu Chak terrorist attack was provided both to civilians and Army personnel under her leadership while commanding Military Hospital, Jammu, for which she was warded Vishisht Seva Medal by President of India.
