The 10th National Handloom Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, 7th August 2024 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This day seeks to honour the handloom workers of the country and provide motivation and sense of pride to the handloom industry by appreciating their contribution to the cultural, traditional and economic landscape of the country. The celebrations are also observed across the country in order to generate awareness about the importance of handloom sector and its contribution to the socio-economic development.
Hon’ble Vice President of India will be the Chief Guest on the occasion. Union Textiles Minister, Shri Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita, Smt. Rachna Shah, Secretary Textiles and Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms) will be attending the function along with other dignitaries like MPs, eminent personalities, Designers, Exporters, Senior Govt. Officers etc. At least 800 weavers from the across the country will be attending the function here.
During the programme, 5 Sant Kabir Awards & 17 National Handloom Awards will be conferred. Award Catalogue and coffee table book- “Parampara- Sustainability in handloom traditions of India” will be released by Hon’ble Vice President of India on the day.
The Inaugural function at Vigyan Bhawan will be followed by Fashion Presentation by NIFT, Screening of films on handlooms, Distribution of certificates to scheme beneficiaries and technical sessions/workshop by Celebrity sari draper Ms. Dolly Jain on Sari trends, Padamshri Dr Rajni Kant on GI, by officials on Handloom Schemes, E-Marketing of Handlooms.
Further, National Handloom Day is being celebrated across the country including Weavers Service Centers (WSCs), prominent handloom clusters (150 nos.), Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHTs), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campuses, National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), Textile Committee, Handloom Departments of various States/UTs etc.
Guided by the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister, the government started celebrating National Handloom Day with the first such celebration being held on 7th August 2015. The date was specifically chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 7th August 1905 and encouraged indigenous industries, particularly handloom weavers. This event seeks to honor the handloom workers of India and provide impetus to the handloom sector.
Various activities have been planned in the country to celebrate 10th National Handloom Day eg Social Media Campaign through My Gov portal: Pledge, Selfies, Design a souvenir, Quiz contest etc, Virasat, an exclusive exhibits (B2C) of awardees with thematic display & live demonstration by NHDC at Handloom Haat, New Delhi (3rd to 16th August ), Virasat- Exclusive exhibition at Delhi Haat INA by National design Centre (1st to 15th August), Special Sourcing show (B2B) at Varanasi by HEPC ( 7th to 9th August), Know Your Weaves event at Crafts Museum ( 1st to 14th August), Handloom expos by States Govt./their I.A., awareness activities in colleges by WSCs, Celebration at WSCs/NHDC offices & States/UTs – Mix of activities, awareness activities viz. quiz on handlooms – “MyHandloomMyPride”, Saree draping workshop, Making of reels in handloom clusters & posting in social media etc. by students of IIHTs, Awareness activities viz. Thematic display/Weaving demonstration, Panel discussion, Quiz on handlooms – “MyHandloomMyPride”, Dressing up competition, Saree draping workshop, Fashion presentations, Making of reels in handloom clusters & posting in social media etc. by NIFT campuses engaging faculties & students.
