Education to Weavers

To empower the weavers by enabling them and their families for career progression, Ministry of Textiles has signed Memorandums of Understanding with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). IGNOU offers continuing education programs through accessible and flexible learning opportunities relevant to the aspirations of handloom weavers and their children for career progression. NIOS officers Secondary and Senior Secondary level education. In the MOUs, there is provision for designing courses exclusively for the handloom weavers and their children. MOUs have been signed in August, 2016.

To improve the earning of handloom weavers and sustainable development of handloom sector, the following schemes are under implementation during 12th Plan:-

(i) National Handloom Development Programme

(ii) Handloom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare Scheme

(iii) Yarn Supply Scheme.

(iv) Comprehensive Handloom Cluster Development Scheme.

The above information was given by the Union Textiles Minister, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani today, in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question.
