RAILWAYS GEARED UP TO MEET Y2K CHALLENGE
Indian Railways is fully geared up to meet the Y2K challenge and all services would run normally like any other day on January 1, 2000.This was revealed in a presentation made to the Chairman of the High Level Action Force, Dr.M.S.Ahluwalia on the status of Y2k preparedness of the Indian Railways.

The passenger reservation system(PRS) in the Railways handles about six and a half lakh reservation transactions every day. It has a major impact on the smooth running of the entire passenger system. The system uses main frame computers at five centres i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and Secunderabad. Railways have already taken steps to make the passenger reservations system Y2K compliant. Y2K compliant version of operating system and application software has been tested successfully at Secunderabad. Contingency plans have also been drawn up to use the railway communication lines in case of failure of DOT leased lines. By October 1, 1999, the full PRS network comprising of more than 500 reservation centres shall also become fully Y2K compliant. The first reservation for the new millennium will be done 60 days before the dawn of the new millennium i.e. on November 2, 1999.

Equipment used for maintenance including ultrasonic flaw detector machines for track maintenance are already Y2K compliant. Most of the critical machinery and plant in the manufacturing units and repair workshops are Y2K compliant. This will ensure that there are absolutely no problems on this account.

42 Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition(SCADA) systems are being used in the Railways for managing traction power distribution. Most of them (36) have been found to be non-Y2K compliant. However, all out efforts are being made to ensure that these systems shall continue to function smoothly at the dawn of new millennium. As a contingency measure, it has also been decided that all major installations will be manned from December 3, 1999 to ensure disruption free service.

To ensure foolproof transition to the new millennium, special plans have been drawn to have an integrated Y2K Audit of Railways, Telecommunications and Power sector for the Mumbai and Calcutta suburban section. Similar External Audits have also been planned for all critical areas.

The High Level Action Force on Monitoring the impact of Y2K Problem in India has been regularly monitoring the status of preparedness of the various critical sectors of the economy including States and private sector.
