ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBERS FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS ON BASE 1982=100 FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST, 2003


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of August, 2003 has decreased by 2 points to stand at 499 (Four hundred & ninety nine). The decrease in index is mainly due to decrease in the prices of Moong Dal, Groundnut Oil, Mustard Oil, Fish Fresh, Vegetables & fruits, Kerosene Oil etc. All India consumer Price Index Number for August 2002 had increased by 3 points.

The rise/fall in index varies from centre to centre. In 43 centres decrease in index was noticed between 1 to 20 points, in 5 centres it remained constant and in 22 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 10 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Rajkot centre experienced the maximum decrease of 20 points on account of decrease in prices of Rice, Wheat, Bajra, Moong Dal, Groundnut Oil, Milk, Vegetables & Fruits, etc. Whereas, Labac-Silchar centre experienced the maximum increase of 10 points. The increase in index was due to rise in prices of Rice, Fish Fresh, Onion, Vegetables & Fruits, Bidi, Barber Charges, etc. However, the index remained stationary in 5 centres viz. Saharanpur, Nagpur, Vadodara, Howrah and Barbil.

The index in respect of six main centres during August, 2003 stood at the following level:

  1. Ahmedabad 491
  2. Bangalore 476
  3. Kolkata 541
  4. Chennai 536
  5. Delhi 575
  6. Mumbai 583

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has decreased from 4.16% in July 2003 to 3.10% in August, 2003. In August, 2002 it was 3.86%.
