QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL
PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH
OF JANUARY, 2003
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of January 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 188.2 which is higher
by 6.4% as compared to the month of January 2002.
The Indices of Industrial
Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors
for the month of January 2003 stand at 148.7, 195.6, and 171.6
respectively, with the corresponding growths of 2.7%, 6.9% and
4.0% as compared to January 2002. The cumulative growth in the
three sectors during April-January, 2002-03 over the corresponding
period of 2001-02 has been 5.4%, 5.8% and 3.8%, respectively.
The overall growth in the General Index during this period has
been 5.5%.
Alongwith the Quick
Estimates of IIP for January 2003, the indices for December 2002
have undergone the first revision and those for October 2002 the
second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received
from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in
the indices for October 2002 and December 2002.
As many as 15
of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth
during the month of January 2003 as compared to the corresponding
month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products
have shown the highest growth of 37.9%, followed by 24.2% in Jute
and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton) and 16.0% in
Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel). On the other hand,
Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a negative
growth of 14.3% followed by a decline of 3.1% in Cotton Textiles.
As per Use-based
classification, the growth in January 2003 over January 2002 is
4.8% in Basic goods, 11.6% in Capital goods and 7.3% in Intermediate
goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded
growth of 0.5% and 7.2% respectively, with the overall growth
in Consumer goods being 5.6%.
