Lt
Gen Bijoy Nandan Shahi assumed the appointment of Director General
Armed Forces Medical Services on 01 Nov 2002.
After
graduating from Darbhanga Medical College with Honours and distinction
in 1964, the General Officer joined the Army Medical Corps on
15 Aug 1964. He did his post Graduation in General Medicine from
Pune University in 1973 secured first position in the University
and appointed Tutor in Department of Medicine, AFMC Pune. DM in
first Cardiologist from Indian Army to be posted to the Indian
Military Training Team at Bhutan. It was not long before he was
posted to the Apex hospital of the Indian Army; Army Hospital
(R&R) as Classified Specialist (Medicine & Cardiology).
His pioneering work in the field of Cardiology brought the Cardiology
Services in the Armed Forces on the National Map. He was promoted
to the rank of Colonel and continued in Army Hospital (R&R)
in the appointment of Senior Advisor (Medicine and Cardiology).
On
promotion to the rank of Brigadier, the General Officer assumed
the appointment of Commandant and Consultant in Cardiology, Armed
Forces Clinic; the prestigious, multi-speciality poly clinic of
the Armed Forces in New Delhi in Jul 94. Here he distinguished
himself as an Administrator too.
On
promotion to the rank of Maj Gen he took over as Commandant of
Super Speciality Hospital of the Armed Forces, Army Hospital (R&R)
in Dec 1997. He was also nominated as Honorary Physician and Cardiologist
to the President of India at this stage.
On
his promotion to the rank of Lt Gen, the General officer assumed
the key appointment of Director General Hospital Services (Armed
Forces), in the office of the DGAFMS in Nov 2001.
In
Feb 2002, the General Officer assumed the coveted appointment
of Director General Medical Services (Army).
As
Head of the Armed Forces Medical Services, comprising of the Medical
Services of the Army, Navy and Air Force the General Officer is
responsible for the health of the entire Armed Forces both during
war and peace. He is also the Principal Medical Advisor to the
Raksha Mantri. He is decorated with Ati
Vishisht Seva Medal and
Vishisht Seva Medal.
