Q1 STEEL PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE
OF MAIN PRODUCERS
During
the first quarter of this fiscal, main steel producers of the
country have produced 40.13 lakh tonnes of saleable steel, which
is 6.4 per cent more than the production during the first quarter
of last year. During this period they have produced 2.83 lakh
tonnes of pig iron, 14.6 per cent more than the target and 61.7
per cent more than the same period last year.
SAIL plants, during
this quarter, have produced 23.77 lakh tonnes of saleable steel
and 86 thousand tonnes of pig iron. Indian Iron & Steel Company
Ltd. (IISCO) produced 73 thousand tonnes of saleable steel and
74 thousand tonnes of pig iron. Tata Iron & Steel Company
(TISCO) contributed 8.42 lakh tonnes of saleable steel which is
slightly more than the target and first quarter figure of the
previous year. Vizag Steel Plant (VSP) produced 7.21 lakh tonnes
of saleable steel and 1.23 lakh tonnes of pig iron showing an
excellent growth during the quarter.
Exports of 6.60
lakh tonnes of finished steel by main and secondary producers
during the quarter was 2.5 per cent less than the first quarter
ending June’ 01. Besides, 50 thousand tonnes of semis were exported
during this period.
Apparent consumption
of finished steel during April-June’ 02 was 6800 thousand tones,
about 22.6 per cent of the estimated annual demand of 30050 thousand
tonnes and 9.7 per cent more than the consumption during April-June’
01. Apparent consumption of 970 thousand tonnes of pig iron was
16.2 per cent more than the consumption during April-June’ 01.
