The second workshop
on MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for the Members of
Parliament concluded here last evening. The participating MPs
raised demands like developing a mechanism for better monitoring
of the works recommended by them and appointing assistant to monitor
and keep record of the works and accounts. Over 250 MPs actively
participated in the workshop.
The Minister
of State for Statistics & Programme Implementation and PMO,
Shri Vijay Goel who presided over the workshop, informed the MPs
that the proposals for appointment of assistants for MPs and increase
in allocation of the fund from Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 3 crore per
year, are under consideration.
Organised by
the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, the
two-day workshop was attended by MPs of all States and Union Territories.
For the first time senior officers of the nodal departments of
these States/UTs were invited with an aim to facilitate proper
interaction between the MPs who recommend the works and the agency
implementing it.
Inaugurating
the second session, the Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri P.M.Syeed
said that MPLADS is a unique experiment in our parliamentary democracy.
It fills the gap that is left out at macro level planning. The
MPLADS fund is an important input for infrastructure development.
Some other suggestions
that came up during the discussions include allowance of purchase
of fixed sports equipment, land for building community assets
and hearse carriage, construction of common shelter for the blinds
and health centers, provision of medical relief to cancer and
heart patients etc..

Chairman of Lok Sabha Committee on MPLADS and senior officers
of the Ministry were also present at the occasion.
