MEMBERS SUGGEST INCREASE IN ALLOCATION

The second workshop on MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for the Members of Parliament concluded here last evening. The participating MPs raised demands like developing a mechanism for better monitoring of the works recommended by them and appointing assistant to monitor and keep record of the works and accounts. Over 250 MPs actively participated in the workshop.

The Minister of State for Statistics & Programme Implementation and PMO, Shri Vijay Goel who presided over the workshop, informed the MPs that the proposals for appointment of assistants for MPs and increase in allocation of the fund from Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 3 crore per year, are under consideration.

Organised by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, the two-day workshop was attended by MPs of all States and Union Territories. For the first time senior officers of the nodal departments of these States/UTs were invited with an aim to facilitate proper interaction between the MPs who recommend the works and the agency implementing it.

Inaugurating the second session, the Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri P.M.Syeed said that MPLADS is a unique experiment in our parliamentary democracy. It fills the gap that is left out at macro level planning. The MPLADS fund is an important input for infrastructure development.

Some other suggestions that came up during the discussions include allowance of purchase of fixed sports equipment, land for building community assets and hearse carriage, construction of common shelter for the blinds and health centers, provision of medical relief to cancer and heart patients etc..

Shri B.B.Ramaiah, Chairman of Lok Sabha Committee on MPLADS and senior officers of the Ministry were also present at the occasion.
