TWO-DAY REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
AND ENVIRONMENT SCHEDULED ON 2-3 MAY, 2002
The Ministry of Environment and Forests,
in partnership with the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Bangkok, Tata
Energy Research Institute (TERI) and Confederation of Indian Industry
(CII), New Delhi is organizing a Regional Workshop on Information
and Communication Technology and the Environment (ICTEAP) for
Asia-Pacific at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 2-3 May, 2002.
The workshop will be inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister of Environment
and Forests, Shri T.R. Baalu. The objectives of this regional
initiative are to enhance the use of ICT for environment management
and governance, facilitate South-South and regional collaboration
and networking, promote ICT based applications for natural resources
and environmental management, as well as to promote environmental
rights and justice though public access to environmental information.
Under this initiative, it is also expected that tangible pilot
projects will be developed and implemented in the region. The
ICTEAP initiative would highlight complimentary regional perspectives
and priorities and would be tailored to address practical realities
of ICT applications as enabling mechanisms for improved environmental
sustainability, particularly in developing countries. Representatives
from the countries in the region, including Ministers of Environment
of Cambodia and Sri Lanka, the Executive Director of UNEP, Nairobi,
Government officials and experts and representatives of industry
are expected to participate in this two-day Workshop.
