ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARDS
The
Election Commission of India has not taken any decision to issue
Electronic Identity Cards to voters. The Electors Photo Identity
Cards being issued presently to electors under the instruction
of the Election Commission contain the photo of the elector and
particulars about the voter’s name, father’s or mother’s name,
sex, age as on January 1 of the year of issue of the card and
residential address as recorded in the electoral roll. The identity
of the elector is established on physical production of the card.
No other electronic devise is necessary to establish the identity.
According
to the Election Commission, the issuance of identity cards has
not been stopped and is a continuous programme.
The Central Government
has released to the States, so far, Rs. 4,29,45,61,710 for issue
of voters’ photo identity cards. The programme is on a cost sharing
basis on 50:50 between the Centre and the States.
