MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR GENERAL SAGAT SINGH
Homage were
paid to Lt Gen SAGAT SINGH, who expired at Army Hospital Research & Referral on
September 26th by the officers and Men of 3rd GORKHA RIFLES - the Regiment he belonged to.
Maj Gen G S Negi - Addl DG Staff Duties at Army HQs led the retired and serving members of
3rd Gorkha Rifles in paying Homage to Lt Gen Sagat Singh.
After an all religion ceremony floral tributes were paid to the General, whose
participation in liberation of Goa and later in Bangladesh made him a legendary figure.
Lt Gen Sagat Singh, the recipient of Padma Bhushan and Param Vishisht Seva Medal, was
commissioned in the Jaipur State Forces. On amalgamation of the State Forces joined Third
Gorkha Rifles. He commanded the Second and Third Battalions of the Third Gorkha Rifles. He
was later the Colonel of the Third Gorkha Regiment from September 1969 to November 1976.
The General Officer had held prestigious command and staff appointments in the course of
his illustrious
career. On promotion to the rank of Brigadier he commanded the Para Brigade and
participated in the Liberation of Goa. As a Major General he commanded a Mountain Division
and later a Communication Zone where he played a pivotal role in quelling the insurgency
in Mizoram. For his distinguished services he was awarded the PVSM, In December 1970 he
took over the command of HQ 4 Corps as a Lieutenant General, which led the famous advance
to Dacca over the River Meghna during the 1971 Ops. He was present in Dacca at the time of
the signing of the surrender by General Niazi. After the war he was awarded the Padma
Bhushan for his services of an exceptional order.
Lt Gen Sagat Singh, Padma Bhushan, PVSM breathed his last at the Research and Referral
Hospital, New Delhi on 26 September 2001.
