INFLATION RATE FALLS WHILE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS RISES

        The rate of inflation, based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers has fallen by 0.50 percent during October, 2001. It went down from 4.73% in September 2001 to 4.23% in October 2001. In October, 2000 the inflation rate was 2.75 %.

        The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for October, 2001 (base 1982-100) has increased by three points to stand at 468 (four hundred & Sixty eight) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year had increased by five points.

        The Fall/Rise in index varied from centre to centre. In 55 centres, the index increased between 1 to 14 points and in 6 centres it remained constant whereas in 19 centres it recorded an decrease of 1 to 9 points when compared to the previous month.

        During the month, Pondicherry centre experienced the maximum increase of 14 points. The increase is mainly due to hike in prices of Rice, Arhar Dal, onions and vegetables and fruits. Bhavnagar and Srinagar centres have experienced the maximum decrease of 9 points each. In Bhavnagar the decrease is mainly on account of fall in the prices of Wheat, Bajra, Moong Dal, Groundnut oil and vegetables and fruits whereas in case of Srinagar the decline in index is due to fall in prices of rice and vegetables and fruits. The Index remained stationery in 6 centres viz. Yamunanagar, Saharanpur, Noamandi, Jamshedpur, Gudur and Ahmedabad.

        The index in respect of six main centres for October, 2001 stood at the following level: -
