CGWA MOUNTS A SPECIAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON ROOF TOP RAIN WATER HARVESTING
The over-exploitation of ground water in the NCT of Delhi has led to continuous decline in ground water levels. Areas registering significant decline fall mainly in south and south-west districts and have been identified as priority areas for taking up artificial recharge to ground water by roof top rain water harvesting. Shallow ground water levels within 5m bgl are mainly in the flood plains of Yamuna falling in east and north-east districts. A comparison of water levels from 1960 to 2001 shows that water levels in major part of Delhi are steadily declining.
With a view to arresting the declining ground water levels and deterioration of ground water quality and augmenting the depleting ground water resources, the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) by a Public Notice has directed all Group Housing Societies (GHSs) in the NCT Delhi except those societies located in Yamuna flood plain area or where water levels are within 8 mtrs below ground water level, and are exploiting ground water have been advised to adopt the Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting System for ground water recharge in their premises by 31st December, 2001.
In this regard, a special awareness programme on roof top rain water harvesting is being organised on 1st and 2nd December, 2001 in the office of CGWB at Jamnagar House, New Delhi. Training in rain water harvesting shall be provided to the Members of GHSs on 1st December, 2001. On 2nd December, 2001, one to one interaction will be held with GHS/Industries/Institutions etc. for providing specific guidance for rain water harvesting.
