POWER GENERATION IN THE COUNTRY

The material being used as fuel for generation of power in the country is broadly classified as coal (including Lignite), gas and liquid fuel. This information was given in the Lok Sabha here today by the Minister of State for Power Smt.Jayawanti Mehta in reply to a written question.

The Minister of State further said that hydro electric power projects utilize available water for power generation and do not need fuel for power generation. She also gave fuel wise generation capacity of projects under construction during the remaining period of the 9th Plan as well as 10th Plan. The details are given below:-

Type of Fuel Capacity under construction in the remaining period of the 9th Plan (MW) Capacity under construction for 10th Plan (MW)
Coal (including Lignite) 710 5440.00
Gas 397.7 1861.105
Liquid Fuel 106 118.632

Levelised tariff is taken as the cost of power generation under each category of thermal power projects. The levelised tariffs are based on Government of India norms considering 68.5% Plant Loan Factor (PLF), 12% discount rate, tentative financial packages submitted by promoters/ project authorities at the time of techno economic clearance (TEC) and exchange rate prevailing at the time of TEC. The maximum and minimum levelised tariffs for each category of thermal power projects based on different fuel materials is as follows:-

Fuel Maximum levelised tariff (Rs./Kwh) Minimum levelised tariff (Rs./Kwh)
Coal 3.46 1.63
Gas 3.06 1.88
Liquid Fuel 3.99 2.43

The Minister also informed that the average cost per MW of coal based, gas based and liquid fuel based thermal power projects presently under construction is in the following range:-

Coal based projects Rs.2.92 crore to 5.35 crore

Gas Rs.3.26 crore to 4.54 crore

Liquid Fuel Rs.3.16 crore to 3.8 crore
