LAW MINISTER RELEASES COURSE MODULE ON GENDER SENSITISATION OF JUDICIAL PERSONNEL

The Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley released a Course Curriculum on Gender Sensitisation of Judicial Personnel compiled jointly by the National Commission for Women and the West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences for sensitising Indian judiciary towards gender justice at a function here today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Law Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley complimented the National Commission for Women for its onerous job and said it deserved special appreciation because it fulfilled a genuine need by focusing on the vital issues of gender justice without which justice would remain a far cry for half of the population of the country. The Minister hoped that this training module would go a long way in sensitising judicial officers at all level right from trainees to the serving judicial officers in terms of justice, equality and fair play between sexes or otherwise as postulated by the Constitution of India. The Minister also said that this would help ensure a gender sensitive enforcement of laws.

The Course Curriculum on Gender Sensitisation of Judicial Personnel aims at enabling the judicial fraternity to appreciate the

patent and latent discriminatory provisions against women in the laws of the country, to understand women rights as human rights and interrogate unsustainable attitudes and practices inherited by the legal system to develop gender neutral attitudes and skills, ultimately to promote justice for women on the basis of equality guaranteed by the Constitution of India. The training module is intended to provide a valuable guide to judicial officers and others in the country with a more sensitised system of dispensing justice.

Earlier, the Chairperson, National Commission for Women, Ms. Vibha Parthasarthi gave an outline of works done by the Commission towards securing gender justice for Indian women. She explained that the present curriculum formed part of the curricula already issued by the Commission for police personnel, administrative personnel and media persons so far. She hoped that these curricula would go a long way in bringing down the wall of prejudices against women by nurturing a gender just mindset which, in turn, would bridge the gap between what has been planned for women and what were delivered to them.
