IRON ORE PRODUCTION UP 3.5 PER CENT
The production of iron ore, during the period April-July 2001 has gone up by 3.52 per cent. The production of iron ore during these 4 months was more than 2.49 crore tonnes against 2.40 crore tonnes during the same period last year. During this period, the despatch for internal consumption has gone up by 1.67 per cent and despatches for exports by 2.28 per cent.
During the first four months of this fiscal Karnataka has produced 29 per cent of the production in the country, followed by Chhattishgarh 24, Orissa 23, Jharkhand 18 and Goa 5 per cent. The public sector has contributed about 57 per cent of the production in July 2001.
India ranks 6th in the production of iron ore in the world and accounts for about 6 per cent of the total production. China tops the list of ore iron producers followed by Brazil, Australia, Russia and United States.
