PROGRESS OF FAST TRACK COURTS

    A total number of 830 Fast Track Courts have been set up all over the country upto October 31, 2001 out of a total of 1734 such courts to be set up under cent percent Centrally Funded Programme.

    The Centre has released Rs.168 crores to the States and Union Territories for Fast Track Courts which includes funds for construction of court rooms. This amount is part of a total of Rs. 504.90 crores to be incurred by the Central Government over a period of five years from April 1, 2001.

    The sessions level Fast Track Courts are expected to serve expeditious disposal of long pending cases. Priority is being given to sessions cases and cases involving undertrials in jails.

    Under the guidelines agreed to by the High Courts, each Fast Track Court is expected to dispose of 14 sessions cases or 25 other important criminal and civil cases per month. It is expected that these courts will dispose of about two million (20 lakh) cases by the year 2005.

    As on October 31, 2001, the Fast Track Courts have disposed of 15,078 cases out of 53,934 cases transferred to it from the existing sessions courts.
