GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING SEPTEMBER, 2001

    During September, 2001, 1658 companies were registered in India under the Companies Act, 1956 as against 2131 companies registered during the corresponding month of the previous year and 1863 companies during the previous month. Of the 1685 companies registered during the month, 1643 companies were limited by shares. No Government Company was registered during the month under review.

    Besides 1643 companies limited by shares, 15 companies were registered as guarantee companies during the month of September, 2001. The total authorised capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs.291.8 crores. One thousand six hundred and forty three companies, limited by shares, registered during the month consist of 82 public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs.97.7 crores and 1561 private limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 191.1 crores.

    The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were from the National Capital Territory of Delhi (319) followed by the State of Maharashtra (318). The States of Tamilnadu (185), Andhra Pradesh (143), West Bengal (121), Karnataka(109), and Gujarat (100) also reported comparatively large number of companies registered during the month. These 7 States together accounted for nearly 78 per cent of the total number of companies registered during the month.

    The analysis of new registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month brings out that the highest number of companies were registered under the Industrial Classification "Manufacturing" (565) followed by "Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (447) and "Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (275). The other important Classification under which large number of companies were registered was, Construction (137) and Community, Social and Personal Services (114).

    One hundred and six Non-Government companies (each with authorized capital of Rs.50 lakhs or above) were registered during the month of September, 2001 as against 102 in the previous month and 206 in September, 2000.

    One hundred and thirty eight companies ceased functioning, during September, 2001 either by going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under Section 560 of the Companies Act. Out of them, 53 were Public Limited Companies and 85 Private Limited. The number of such companies in the previous month was 5. Of these 138 companies, 68 belong to the State of Haryana, 46 to Delhi, 19 to Rajasthan, 4 to Tamil Nadu and 1 to West Bengal. Broad Industrial Classification wise out of the 138 companies, 66 belonged to Finance etc. 41 to Manufacturing, 18 to Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels, 2 each to Agricultural activities & Community, Social & Personal Service, 4 each to Mining and Quarrying & Construction and one to Transport, Storage & Communication. Six Non-Government public companies were amalgamated during September, 2001. Out of these six companies three companies each belong to Gujarat and Delhi.
