PRESS NOTE

Subject: Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index (Base1993-94=100) for the month of September, 2001.

    The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of September, 2001 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 161.2 which is higher by 1.6% as compared to the month of September, 2000.

    2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of September, 2001 stand at 128.8, 165.7, and 159.2 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 2.7%, 1.1% and 4.1% as compared to September, 2000. The cumulative growths during April-September, 2001-02 over the orresponding period of 2000-01 in the three sectors have been -0.2%, 2.4% and 3.0% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 2.3%.

    3. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for September, 2001, the indices for August, 2001 have undergone the first revision and those for June, 2001 have undergone the second (final) revision based upon the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for June, 2001 and August, 2001.

    4. Nine out of seventeen two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of September, 2001 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Leather and Leather & Fur Products have shown the highest growth of 35.3% followed by 9.6% in Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products and 6.3% in Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and Coal Products. On the other hand, Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles have shown a growth of –11.3% followed by a growth of –10.9% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel) and –8.9% in Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except Cotton).

    5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in September, 2001 as compared to September, 2000 is 3.8% in Basic goods, -11.6% in Capital goods and 2.2% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 18.8% and -3.4% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 2.6%.

    6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of September, 2001 alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year including the cumulative indices and growth rates are enclosed.
