11 MUSEUM OF AIR AND DOORDARSHAN INAUGURATED The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the Museum of All India Radio and Doordarshan, at a commemorative function, here today. Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Smt. Swaraj said that on this historic day in 1947, Mahatma Gandhi came to the Broadcasting House to record a message for the grief-stricken refugees in the aftermath of partition and that was the only time he visited AIR Delhi. To commemorate that day, Prasar Bharati has been observing 12th November as Public Service Broadcasting Day, she said. The Minister further said that the Museum, the first of its kind in India, would be a visual treat that refreshes our memory and recreates the history of broadcasting in India.Mahatma Gandhis message to the refugees, which was broadcast 54 years ago, was played back on the occasion. The museum houses rare photographs, press clippings, scripts etc. of historic occasions. The museum also displays musical instruments, hardware like old microphones, gramophone records, the first video camera, different formats of video tapes, very old Radio and TV sets, recording machines etc.
Also present on the occasion were the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ramesh Bais, Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Pawan Chopra and CEO, Prasar Bharti, Shri Anil Baijal.
The Broadcasting Engineering Society also celebrated the Public Service Broadcasting Day and honoured renowned scientist, Dr. Raja Ramanna on the occasion. Presiding over the function, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Sushma Swaraj said that the multiplicity of private channels in India has all the more emphasized the need of a powerful and effective Public Service Broadcaster. The private channels are all market driven and highly commercially oriented. Even the news channels try to sensationalize the issues to sell their bulletins. But the Public Service Broadcaster always keeps in mind the interests of the people at large, Smt Swaraj said.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO, Prasar Bharati, Shri Anil Baijal said that Prasar Bharati is trying to maintain a difficult balance between being a Broadcaster with Public Service as a guiding force and achieving commercial viability. He said the channel branding is being adopted to give each channel an identity of its own. For instance, the proposed DD-Bharati would give programmes for children, health and fitness and art and culture, he said.
