INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ROAD TRANSPORT

    An International Seminar on ‘Sustainable Development in Road Transport’ is being organised jointly by the Indian Roads Congress and Permanent International Association of Road Congress (World Road Congress) in co-operation with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, State PWDs, leading Public and Private Sector Organisations, consultants and contractors. The Seminar will be held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi from 8th to 10th November 2001.

    The Seminar aims at providing a forum to Engineers, Planners, Consultants, Administrators, Contractors, Manufacuturers and Suppliers to exchange views and ideas on sustainable development in road transport. The Seminar is designed to address issues like Road Transport Technology, Road Safety and other Externalities, Institutional Development and Financing. All these issues are expected to be of immense interest to both the developed and developing countries.

The Seminar will cover the following themes:

Theme-1: Road Transport Technology and Energy Conservation

(i) Construction and Maintenance Technology for Roads and

Bridges

    1. Use of Local Resources, Reclaimed Materials and
    2. Appropriate Technology

    3. Information Technology in Road Transport
    4. Energy Conservation in Road Transport
    5. Transport Policy & Priorities

Theme-II: Social, Economic, Environmental and Safety Concerns

    1. Environmental Considerations in Design, Construction, Maintenance and Operation of Highways
    2. Road Safety, Environment and Role of NGOs
    3. Community Participation and Consultation
    4. Road Users Needs and Concerns

Theme-III Sustainable Development of Road Infrastructure

    1. Planning & Financing
    2. Institutional Development Strategies and Reforms
    3. Road User Charges and Related Policy Issues
    4. Human Resource Development

The Seminar is expected to be attended by about 400 experts from India and abroad.
