RAILWAYS SHOULD FOCUS ON PEOPLE-FRIENDLY APPROACH -- CHAIRMAN RAILWAY BOARD

    Focus on inculcating value systems among the front line staff to make them responsive to the needs of the railway users will help improve the image of the Indian Railways considerably, said Chairman Railway Board Shri R.N. Malhotra here today. While quantitative improvements in service is a healthy indicator for any organisation it should not be at the cost of quality. Addressing the conference of the Additional General Managers of the Zonal Railways Shri Malhotra urged them to initiate innovative measures to make the Railways a more and more people-friendly organisation.

    Reviewing the functioning of the Public Grievances Redressal Machinery on the Railways Shri Malhotra asked the Managers to implement practical measures to contain the menace of touts by displaying reservation status and information on availability of tickets at all reservation centres. Railwaymen are duty bound to ensure hassle-free journey to its passsengers, he added. Stating that a month-long cleanliness drive has been launched across the Zonal railways Shri Malhotra asked the Managers to ensure proper coordination among different agencies involved in this task. Stressing on the need to create better awareness among the travelling public to cooperate in providing a cleaner Railway system the Chairman urged the staff to constantly monitor neatness on platform, availability of adequate number of dustbins and timely disposal of garbage from the railway premises.

    Expressing concern over the growing number of court cases Shri Malhotra said that this will tarnish the image of one the most reliable transport systems in the country. He asked the railway mangers to streamline the system of monitoring court cases and deficiency in service must be avoided to minimise complaints on passenger amenities.
