RSP GETS RS.26 CRORE FROM RECYCLED SOLID WASTES

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) in the Steel Ministry has adopted a unique strategy of recycling and selling the solid waste generated in the steel making process. It achieves the twin objectives of revenue generation and pollution control. In 2000-01, RSP earned Rs.26 crore through sale of recycled solid waste such as slag from BF and SMS-II, BF flue dust, SMS-II sludge, acetylene sludge and Calcining Plant-II lime dust. Solid waste utilization is a key aspect of the plant’s environmental management plan.

Sale of granulated BF slag resulted in a realization of Rs.16.82 crore, while utilization of 43,628 tonnes of SMS-II slag for internal use resulted in savings of Rs.4.77 crore. Sale of 7,641 tonnes of BF flue dust contributed to an earning of Rs.10.08 lakh. In addition, a saving of Rs.4 crore was effected by reusing 21.16 tonnes and selling 348 tonnes of lime dust. While sale of used refractory brick resulted in an earning of Rs.13 lakh, sale of 1,607 tonnes of acetylene sludge earned the plant Rs.2.21 lakh.
