ELECTION COMMISSION REVIEWS THE PREPARATION FOR THE ASSEMBLY POLLS- 2001

The Election Commission met today to review the preparations for the five State Elections. The Commission particularly surveyed the police deployment and bandobast in each State and the effectiveness of the senior civil and police administration, as well as the Central Observers. Necessary directions have been given to tighten and fine-tune the arrangements.

The Commission is particularly concerned at the tone and tenor of the Television advertisements and projects, particularly by the channels, associated with two major political parties in Tamil Nadu. The Commission would once again, like to stress to all Television channels in Tamil Nadu, as well as in other states going to elections that they must restrain themselves and maintain fair electoral practices. The political parties, since they are seeking public support in order to govern respective States for the next five years must focus on projecting to the voters their programmes and hopes of people.
