REVISED CURRICULUM FOR LLB COURSE
The Bar Council (BCI) of India has revised curriculum for LLB course. Accordingly, there will be 21 compulsory legal papers in addition to four compulsory training papers and three optional papers. In all, there will be 28 papers.
Since LLB course is professional one, it is essential to impart legal education efficiently and evening law colleges for want of adequate time can not do so. Evening law colleges cannot also effectively conduct practical training as prescribed by the Bar Council of India. It was in this context that the BCI took a policy decision to direct all the law colleges in the country to convert the existing evening sessions to day sessions if they were running exclusively evening sessions and in case they were running both day and evening sessions, they were instructed to discontinue evening sessions. The BCIs decision was conveyed in January, 2000. Evening law colleges generally function for two to two and a half hours a day, which is not adequate to impart professional legal education in accordance with the new curriculum prescribed by the BCI under its rules.
More than 450 evening law colleges have so far been closed down all over the country.
