STATES TO IMPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS OF NATIONAL EXPERT COMMITTEE ON WOMEN PRISONERS

The recommendations of the National Expert Committee on Women Prisoners, headed by Shri Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, have been sent to the State Governments for implementation.

The Committee had in 1987 recommended setting up of the Family Court or the Women’s Court for dispensing justice to women prisoners. The Committee had also recommended that Nari Bandigriha Adalats be held as mobile judicial camps as an immediate modality for rendering speedy redress to women in custody in addition to the separate Women’s Court or Family Court.

The administration of justice in the district and subordinate courts comes under the purview of the concerned State Governments and High Courts. It is within the prerogative of the State Governments and High Courts to set up such exclusive courts for women prisoners.
