SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN

    The Government has recently launched the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) – a National Programme for Universal Elementary Education to provide eight years of elementary education to all children in the 6-14 age group by 2010. Rs. 88.50 crore has been released under the SSA to 27 States/Union Territories so far for starting preparatory activities in 225 districts. It is proposed to cover all the districts in the country under SSA by 31st March, 2001. An allocation of Rs. 500 crore has been made for SSA during 2001-2002. Grants will be given to States on the basis of the District Elementary Education Plan proposals of the States/UTs.

    The Government of India has set up the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan National Mission (SSANM) in the Ministry of Human Resource Development under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister by a Resolution dated 2.1.2001.

    The SSANM will be an independent and autonomous wing of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, vested with full executive and financial powers in its sphere of work. It will be the nodal body for all matters relating to elementary education at the national level. The SSANM shall have a Governing Council chaired by the Prime Minister and an Executive Committee chaired by the Minister for Human Resource Development.
