Shri V.K. Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, has been elected Chairman of Governing Council of Tokyo Centre of World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). It is for the first time that India has been elected to this distinguished position. In addition, Shri Chaturvedi also represents WANO Tokyo Centre on the WANO Governing Board an apex body which establishes policies and goals for this world organization. The WANO is an international non-government body representing 115 utilities from 34 countries. India is one of the founding members of WANO. Al the 438 nuclear reactors operating worldwide are represented in WANO. WANO operates through its four regional centres at Atlanta, Paris, Moscow and Tokyo and co-ordination centre at London. The governing board of each regional centre guides the activities of that centre. The WANO Tokyo represents 89 nuclear reactors under operation with a capacity of 66998 MWe, 18 units under construction with a capacity of 15,568 MWe in China, India, Japan, Korea, Pakistan and Taiwan.
